Accommodation and places to stay

Atypical

Off the beaten track

Normandy offers a wide choice of unusual, atypical holidays for visitors looking for something a little different.

Sleep in a tree-house

The Château de Canon, in the Calvados, is a classified 18th century château with extensive grounds, which is well worth a visit : why not stay overnight - 50 ft above the ground, in a tree-house constructed in a two hundred year old plane tree? With accommodation for two, a living room that also serves as bedroom, and a terrace, it is just the thing for an off-beat weekend or longer. Or for something more spacious, the Jardin de la Renardière offers a family-size tree house on two levels, in the lovely Perche country. Sleep among the birds and wake to the sound of the morning chorus.

Find your own ivory tower

Overlooking Honfleur, at the foot of a nineteenth century lighthouse whose light guided local mariners for nearly a century, accommodation is available in the former keeper's residence. The tower is too narrow to sleep in, but visitors have breakfast on the ground floor, and can climb the 164 steps to admire the view over the Seine estuary from the 100-foot high lantern.

6 - Chausey-Voilier

Holiday on a small island

A few miles off the coast of the Cotentin peninsula, opposite Granville, lie the Chausey islands, whose five square miles are a favourite destination for day-trippers and yachtsmen. In the summer evenings, when the tourists have left, the few residents have the islands to themselves. The single hotel, and the old farm, now restored and converted into holiday studios, both offer accommodation for island-lovers who seek the quiet life and healthy maritime air of this unique archipelago, where low water at spring tides reveals 200 square km of sand and rocks to delight naturalists and beach-combers.

Spend a week on the farm

Enjoy a taste of the rural way of life with a few days or more at one of the many farms in Normandy that welcome paying guests :  stay with the farmer and his family, start the day with a copious farm breakfast, follow the daily work on the farm, or explore the local area.

Sleep in a giant Calvados barrel

Truly "immerse" yourself in the Norman culture, spending a night in a huge barrel once used to store Calvados. With a capacity of over 10,000 litres, once tipped on their side these barrels can be transformed into a pretty little bedroom. Firmly anchored in the Norman soil, the circular room is ideal for two (and no more!).

Live like the Genhis Khan!

Here you can spend some time in one of the seven different-sized yurts, the mobile homes of the Mongols. Each is decorated like the true yurts of Central Asia and the largest yurt can accommodate up to 15 persons.

Conquer a Napoleonic coastal fortress

The Famous Five would have had a field day in this Napoleonic fort on the Cotentin Peninsula. Situated beside the coastal path where coast guards once kept watch over the shores, no doubt scouting out potential smugglers, the 19th century fortress is accessed only by drawbridge. Buffeted by the wind and waves, the fort-turned-guesthouse dominates the cape which looks out across Cherbourg harbour with the breakfast room providing a particularly noteworthy sweeping panoramic view of the sea.
